Ethan left early the next morning for his aunt's house, and I leaned against the door,eating breakfast while watching him start the car, and when he drove up the road, my last bite of bread was finished.

I patted the crumbs out of my fingers, my mind was cleared for a moment, and I looked at the pristine sky, not knowing what to do.

On both sides of the house were planted rows of silvery plants, like from the Nutcracker, with fairy tales of the never yellowing years of fantasy. I thought of Agnes and her childlike brushstrokes, and simply sat on the threshold, enjoying the complete silence and leisure.
